Do you ever wish you still had the option to press the F8 key to boot up in SAFE MODE? I certainly know it would have helped on quite a few computers we’ve repaired. However Microsoft (in their misguided wisdom) removed that feature from Windows. Why? I have no clue. Their recommendation is just to ‘Reinstall or Refresh Windows if you have a problem’. Well, that doesn’t always work well in today’s world, especially when it was a Microsoft update that caused the problem in the first place.
So… here’s how to fix your Windows to use the F8 key, if you need it.
Open an ‘elevated command prompt’. This means click the START menu and type CMD, but don’t press ENTER yet. When the search finds it, RIGHT CLICK on it and click RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR! Congratulations, you are an elevated user (for the time being).
Now… you want to type this in the DOS Window.
bcdedit /set {current} bootmenupolicy Legacy
And press ENTER. It should say it was successful. If so, you’re good. Just close the box.
Now… if your PC won’t boot up, you can press F8 when your system starts to get that familiar window where you can select SAFE MODE. Now you maybe able to even repair your computer if something goes wrong. (And Windows 10 goes wrong quite often, so it’s a good thing).
